“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them,
I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
And everyone that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not,
shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
And everyone that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not,
shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”
~~~Matthew 7: 24-27 ~~~
I know that today I chose a rather long passage for out text, but the Lord really showed me a few things the other day. This added to the obvious portions of the verse made a big impact on me. I would like to simply share these few lessons from the builders in this story.
~~~~~~Lessons from the Wise Man~~~~~~
1.) He knew what building materials were right, because he had listened to instructions
We can build our house strong and firm, if we use the right materials. The only place to learn about those materials is God and His words. The world does not provide sound advice for our spiritual building project.
2.) He began building his house correctly, because he applied what he had heard and been taught
Our house can be built correctly, if we will take what we have been taught about the Lord and His desires for our life and actually apply them to building our house. So often I know I maybe follow the above lesson. I hear the instructions and gather the materials, but then I never apply them to building my house.
3.) He knew what foundation was sure
Psalms 18: 31 says, “For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God?” The Lord is the only foundation that will be sure and secure for our house to be built on. As stated above we must apply this knowledge to our building. So many Christians still choose to build their house on shallow things of the world.
4.) He finished building his house
We will never be completely finished embellishing our house with the glorious materials from God, but the structural aspect of our house should be sound. We need to know what we believe, and why we believe it, because when the storms come, we need to have a sure framework that is founded on the foundation of the rock of God to safely keep on through the storms of life.
~~~~~~Lessons from the Foolish Man~~~~~~
1.) He listened, but did not do.
Remember we talked about the wise man listening and that hearing gave him the materials for his building project. The foolish man also heard and in turn had access to the same materials as the wise man.
The difference becomes apparent when we look at the next step the wise man took. The wise man began building his house correctly from the start, because he applied what he had heard. He used the materials he had gained access to. The foolish man chose not use the materials he had been instructed to use. He did not apply what he had heard. Instead he used the unstable materials the world had to offer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can clearly see where building on the world’s building instructions took the foolish man. His house was destroyed. All this could have been prevented if only he had used the right materials. We too have a choice to make. We can either follow in the steps of the wise man by listening to the Lord and then doing what He says. or We can follow the foolish man’s steps that took him to destruction and ruin, because he heard, but did not do what the Lord told Him to do.
When we build on the foundation of God, we can weather any storm. The rains may descended, the floods may rise, the winds may blow, but we will stand, because we have a sure foundation and a strong structure. The foolish man does not have this strong claim. He is not founded on the Rock and his framework is shaky at best. When the rains descend and the floods rise, when the winds blow, He will not rest safely inside of his house, because he can not be sure that his house will stand.
The wise man will be able to be at peace even in the worst storm, but the foolish man will be fretting every time even a breeze blows by. Which life do you want? Peace and security or fear and unrest? The choice belongs to each of us. The Lord is waiting for us to follow Him, but we must choose. Please, choose to follow the Lord’s building plan today.
~~~Blessings~~~
