Hebrews 13
I went to a Kutless concert last night, and John Micah, the lead singer, shared Hebrews 13:5, which really spoke to me. I went home to read it in my Bible, and discovered that the first part of the book of Hebrews chapter 13 is full of good advice that I could use:
1Keep on loving each other as brothers. 2Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. 3Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
4Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. 5Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.” 6So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?”
Reading verse 5 was especially helpful to me. I realized that, because God has said that he will never leave me, and never forsake me, I don’t ever need to worry. The God Who created the universe is always by my side. There is never so much as the space of a moment where He is not with me. Because of that, I will not be afraid, no matter the circumstances, for man can do nothing to me!
The rest of these verses are instructive as well. It was encouraging to me to have a reminder that I need to keep on loving others as brothers and sisters in Christ. This came at a time when I was getting discouraged and sick of trying to reach out to people, only to have it not make a difference from my perspective. But Paul says that we are to keep loving others, entertaining strangers, visiting prisoners, and loving our enemies. Paul exhorts us to maintain our purity and stop loving money and material possessions. Instead, we are to be content with what we have.
I hope this reminder to be content in God alone, and what He has given you, is as helpful to you as it was to me. God bless! :)
