Merry Christmas!
I'm so fond of Christmas--it holds so many lovely memories. This Christmas will be extra special because my brothers are coming home after moving out this Spring. I can't wait to see them! I hope Colorado finds some snow by the time they get here. :D I thought I'd post this piece of prose that I wrote a few years ago.
The wind was howling like a giant bear,
Blowing enormous gusts of frosty white snow
Across the fields of the small green farm.
The house was snuggled warm and tight in
A low valley, covered with snow and ice.
The trees bowed around the barn, sheltering little
Birds asleep in their nests. No sound was heard
Across the meadows in the big brown prairie
But the comforting roar of the wind, the light tingle
On the frosted windows, and the delicious crackling of the
Fire. And, soon, after the shadow of night had lain on
The small black roof of the little powdered house,
The great yellow sun came out, shaking his cold red face.
He smiled down and blew white warm breath, making
The icicles shake and drip and the prairie's white meadows bright
And happy. The children of the little house soon came out,
Whistling and laughing and singing. The sound of sleigh bells
was heard and the children cried, "Hullo! Merry Christmas!"
And both Grandmothers and Grandfathers came inside,
The cherry-cheeked children, eyes bright and twinkling
Following the beloved four that they had watched for.
The delight was begun; Christmas day was here.
All gathered around, Mother and Father and Children and
Aunts and Uncles and all the Relations sang songs about the baby
Born in a barn a long time ago. Then Grandfather and Father
of the Little white house sat down and read from the old black Bible
The story of Jesus, that same little babe.
Then there was present opening and, then, time for the
Great feast of Christmas. With roast turkey and casseroles
And sweet rolls and vegetables and cranberry sauce,
Then pies and cakes and cookies.
And all the time, the one called Jesus was with his Father in
The sky, watching All with a happy face. And the one we
Call the Spirit of Holiness was there in the hearts of everyone.
And when the clock struck very late and Christmas was almost gone,
The children rushed to tell the world once more, "Merry Christmas!"
