Something More Sure

In October, I was studying First and Second Peter. I learned so many things over the course of the month. Here is one of the sections that really stuck out to me and a few of my thoughts on what I came to see in a new way!

"For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. "
(2 Peter 1:16-21 ESV)

Here we see the testimony of those people that SAW Jesus with their own eyes. Yet, they tell us that there is something more sure. That something is the Word of God, the Holy Bible.

When I came to this verse, I had to stop. I had to re-read it. I spent quite a bit of time looking at this section. Really think about it. We tend to believe something most when we have seen it with our own eyes.

What makes the testimony of God's Word more sure than the testimony of eyewitnesses?
I suppose it's this: when the Holy Spirit works out the truth of God's Word in you by bringing you to really know and understand it, that is sure. It is more sure than anything you can work out in yourself.

When you see something for yourself or hear from someone who saw it, that's all well and good....

The point is this:

Would you rather have God tell you Himself?
or
Would you rather have someone who saw it tell you?

God has told us. His Word is truth. His Word is more sure than any other testimony we can ever have or hear!

Embrace this truth and join me in treating God's Word as more sure simply because it comes from God Himself and comes to God's people by the power of the Holy Spirit.
