About a month ago, I began to really seek to know the Lord as my heavenly Father. I started wondering how to begin learning more about Him. I started thinking about my earthly father. I know my dad pretty well, because (A.) I have spent a lot of time with him; (B.) I have listened to his advice, wisdom, and teachings; (C.) I have seen his character through the stories and events of his life; and (D.) I have listened to what others, like my mother, my dad’s mom and dad, and his siblings, have said about him.
These things began to bring about a time of planning and praying. I have decided to take a journey. The goal of this journey is to know my heavenly Father better. I have a simple travel itinerary.
1.) Spend time with my heavenly Father through prayer
2.) Spend time in reading His teachings and advice
3.) Learn about His life and character
4.) Be around those that know Him well
Most of the above, I have been doing since even before I was saved, but I recently realized that many of the above have just become routine events in my busy schedule. I do not want them to be a ritual. I want to learn to really know my Father.
There are a few things that I have decided to do on this journey. They are not in a permanent order. I may decide to change some of my traveling plans later, but these are the main things I feel led by the Spirit to do on this journey.
1.) Really learn about my Father’s life by reading through the Gospels
2.) Read my Father’s teachings by doing a topical study of the Bible
3.) Read about those who knew Him best by doing a Bible character study
As shown above I will begin with reading through the Gospels. Some days I may only read a few verses, other days I may read a chapter. I am going to be taking this at a pace set by the Spirit’s leading. I want to really process the lessons of the Gospels as I read through them.
I have told you all of this, to ask one simple question. Will you join me in this commitment to know my Father better? You may decide that reading through the Gospels first is not the exact path your journey will take you. That is fine. Each journey should be led by the Holy Spirit, but please commit to the top four guidelines.
I firmly believe that this journey will bring us closer to our heavenly Father than we ever imagined possible. The closer we are to our Father, the more we will reflect Him. The more we reflect Him, the more others will see Him and not us. Isn’t showing Christ to others the biggest purpose of the Christian life?
Please, commit to this journey. It will certainly be life changing and wonderful. Will you join me?
